This article reviews the concept of cultural identityvis-à-vis the viewing of soap operas, or telenovelas, within the Mexican context. The patterns of viewing, role modeling, narrative, and other characteristics are reviewed to define the ways in which this audiovisual genre contributes to the building of cultural elements within Mexican society.
