Setting Future Directions at the National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR)

Abstract

As a part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) is accountable to Congress and to the American public for how it spends its budget. The process of making decisions and setting future directions at NINR must remain open and transparent. All institutes within NIH follow rigorous criteria for selecting research projects to fund and initiatives to pursue. Consistent with the new NIH Roadmap, NINR conducted a series of planning meetings to draw up a set of future research themes. In addition, NINR participates in several other regular, ongoing forums to answer questions and receive input from health care experts and the public. The results of nursing research are having a growing effect on the health of the nation, and NINR must continue to work toward meeting the needs of nurses in providing evidence-based care.
