This article presents a historical overview of the U.S. health care system and illustrates how health policy developed in the private and public health care sectors. The politics of health care change are discussed in depth, particularly in relation to cost containment and the rise of the uninsured. Finally, the impact of future health care trends is related to nursing practice, research, and education.
