The critical period hypothesis of language development implies that mentally impaired persons beyond the age range of 11 to 14 years will reveal little or no further development of language behavior. The results of the present study, using mentally impaired children with CAs ≤ 11 years and ≥ 16 years, did not support this critical period hypothesis.
