HPLC methods have been developed and used for the direct analysis of a wide range of anhydride materials. The results obtained enable concentrations of acid impurities to be determined with a detection limit of the order of 5 ppm (wlw). The analysis of dianhydrides also enables the partial hydrolysis product, i.e. a mixed acidlanhydride species, to be determined. HPLC has the capability to allow strict quality control procedures to be established, products from different manufacturing sources to be assessed and product syntheses to be optimized.
