Problem: The work to formalize the academic knowledge of HRD generated a research literature base to influence HRD practice and to form the basis for further research and theory-building. Current HRD scholarship builds on the foundations that were laid in the 1970s through 1990s. As the field continues to grow, it is important that we understand the work of the early scholars and the impact they have had on HRD. Solution: Many researchers were involved in the early HRD scholarly work, and a handful were recognized by the Academy of Human Resource Development (AHRD) through its Outstanding Scholar Award. The early winners of the award largely framed HRD as an emerging academic discipline. This article summarizes the work of the first seven winners. Stakeholders: It is important that HRD researchers and students know the work of the seven scholars described in this article. In addition, HRD practitioners will see how some of their current practices evolved from the early research and theory-building undertaken by these scholars.
