Abstract
The nature of PVC crystallinity and its relationship with PVC morphology is reviewed. PVC is unusual in that it is actually processed below its true crystalline melting temperature. For this reason, its properties are extremely dependant on processing conditions. The effect of crystallinity on processing is discussed in some detail, as well as its effect on subsequent properties. PVC exhibits a number of unusual phenomena, such as physical ageing and antiplasticisation. While the former effect for plasticised PVC is certainly a result of crystallisation, the cause of the latter is still a matter for discussion. One school of thought does attribute antiplasticisation effects to crystallisation. Orientation, which is being used increasingly for property enhancement, is also accompanied by a crystallisation process.
