Elastomer components may have to operate under conditions of high stress, high pressure, or extremes of temperature. The assessment of physical property requirements and means of achieving them are considered in several application areas. The high strength, high damping, and non-linearity requirements of seismic bearings are discussed. Aspects of interfacial failure and explosive decompression when elastomers operate at high pressures are described. Low temperature effects, and the influence of processing conditions on vulcanizate properties are also briefly considered.
