In addressing the title of the paper the author discusses the current levels of tyre and related vehicle performance and how they have developed during the years since the first Foundation Lecture in 1946. Using the understanding of road, tyre and vehicle interactions gained during the author's career the paper relates these to what is possible today and suggests what changes will be needed if the future of the road transport industry is to be assured.
