Abstract
This paper attempts to highlight the achievements of the tyre technologist over the last thiry years, principally in terms of car and truck tyres and with particular reference to the achievements of the European tyre manufacturing group of Dunlop Ltd., now part of Sumitomo Rubber Industries of Japan. The paper uses the developments of the recent past to suggest how future trends may develop. There is a need for the rate of progress established by the tyre and the transport system as a whole to continue at least at the same rate as before if the increasing demands of efficiency, safety and environmental protection are to be met. Failure to meet these requirements could see the start of the decline of the road transport system and its failure even to be adopted within developing countries.
