Abstract
Attention is drawn to a number of recent developments in cable technology which are considered to constitute significant advances during recent years. These include: the Conform continuous casting process for copper rod and wire production; the crosslinking of polymeric cable insulation by radiation processing and by the silane grafting technique; the improvement of the reaction-to-fire properties of polymeric insulated cables and the design and construction of optical fibre cables. A novel installation technique used during the laying of the cross-channel submarine power cables is also described.
