Abstract
Acrylonitrile Butadiene Rubber (NBR) was reinforced with silica by the in situ precipitation. Silica was prepared in the NBR latex by using sodium silicate and ammonium chloride. The latex was then coagulated, dried properly and compounded on a mixing mill with other compounding ingredients. Mixes containing conventional silica of the same concentration was also prepared for comparison. All the compounds were vulcanised up to their optimum cure times. Mechanical properties are found to be superior for vulcanizates containing in-situ precipitated silica. The nitrile rubber-silica composite prepared by the novel method shows better properties and improved rubber – filler interaction.
