Abstract
The paper reviews the development and application of tungsten halogen lamps since their first introduction. The halogen cycle is described and the advantages of using bromine compounds in the fill gas of some halogen lamps are indicated. Many problems have arisen from the use of halogens; the ways in which these have been overcome by the development of new manufacturing processes and appropriate process control techniques are discussed. Current applications are very numerous and the most important are reviewed, the corresponding lamp details being tabulated. Reasons are given why it is unlikely that halogen lamps will displace the GLS types; instead they will continue to complement them.
