Abstract
Different aspects of the development of ballasts for discharge lamps are reviewed in these three papers. Part 1 deals with the development of materials and their use in ballast construction, Part 2 discusses circuits for different types of lamp and Part 3 summarises desirable characteristics for ballasts, the relevant international and British standards and test methods. The papers do not deal with high frequency, transport or semi-conductor ballasts. References for the three sections of the paper are given at the end of Part 3.
