Abstract
The various design criteria which have from time to time been proposed for lighting installations in working environments are examined. It is shown that there is a limited range of conditions within which it is possible to satisfy them all with the exception of direction of modelling, while some daylight from side windows will be sufficient to correct the direction of modelling during a large part of the year. The range of conditions to satisfy all design criteria simultaneously may conveniently be expressed as a set of illumination values for the walls and ceiling in terms of that of the working plane, taken together with the requirement for some daylight from side windows and reasonably high reflectances of internal surfaces.
