Abstract
The requirements for quality in street lighting based on the average luminance of the road surface, the degree of glare caused by the light sources and the degree of non-uniformity of the lighting pattern suggested as a result of the investigations by de Boer and his colleagues,1 are reviewed, and methods of achieving these requirements for traffic routes are discussed bearing in mind the practical difficulties and problems involved. The research reported to date has been concerned with technical matters as distinct from aesthetic matters and has been confined to traffic routes. In this paper an attempt is therefore made to widen the scope considerably by introducing the important aesthetic aspect and extending the field to include the three main categories of public lighting, namely, traffic routes, residential roads and city centres.
