Abstract
The importance of standard specifications in the lighting industry is increasing rapidly but their efficient use can only be ensured when the manufacturer, consultant and user know something of the foundations upon which such specifications are built. The process of producing a British Standard Specification is described, explanatory examples of some of the technical problems being drawn from the newly published B.S. specification for lighting fittings. Reference to the work of, and inter-relationship between, international standardisation bodies is included together with some ancillary subjects closely related to the use of standard specifications by purchaser and manufacturer.
