It is proposed that pedestrian crossings which require supplementary lighting be floodlit from the direction of the oncoming traffic, so that motorists see the pedestrians illuminated directly. Glare can be avoided by using a light beam of sharp cut-off, and by shielding the primary light source. An experimental installation has proven very effective, even under adverse weather conditions. A crossing on a 60 ft wide two-way street can be lit acceptably using two 500 W lamps.
