Abstract
This paper discusses criteria for artificial lighting derived from the study of the distribution of light of optimum natural fields of view, and explains the use of these criteria in practical design procedure including the application of environmental colour on an engineering basis. These ideas are then extended to cover their application to standards of visual comfort, and to the design of lighting fittings, and their use in installations to produce balanced brightnesses that are acceptable to the majority of people. In this connection the most recent work of the “Q and Q” Committee of the American I.E.S. is reviewed.
