This article examines the merits of body mass index (BMI), waist and hip measurements as indicators of total body fat and diabetes risk. Diabetes risk increases with obesity, with the accumulation of central fat being closely related with insulin resistance. This promotes other features of metabolic syndrome, including glucose intolerance, to increase vascular risk.
