This article explores the difficulties encountered by researchers as they embark on
personal narrative study. It is based on research conducted with Irish gay men as
they reflect on their lives, coming of age during the 1970s. Drawing on interview
transcripts and the researcher's journal, the article charts dilemmas of
disclosure, rapport and the construction of the self in the narrative.
