Abstract
In the broader context of tourism and urban regeneration, this study examines the impact that the development of the tourist tramway in Christchurch, New Zealand, has had on adjoining land uses. Land use patterns along the tram circuit are mapped prior to the opening of the tramway and then re-examined at subsequent dates in an attempt to measure the impact of the tram. The attitudes and behaviour of two sets of retailers along the circuit are also examined before and after the opening of the tramway. The results of this longitudinal analysis suggest the development of the tourist tramway has had only a moderate impact on land use patterns and urban revitalisation in Christchurch.
