Abstract
This paper argues for the use of action research both within industrial contexts and in educational establishments. For industrial commercial hospitality organisations, action research could assist mangers to improve practice through the study of complex situations in a way that takes account of a variety of stakeholder interests. Action research involves an approach which is compatible with learning organisations, and the development of a culture of permanent improvement. For hospitality management educators action research represents both a technique to include in the development of hospitality managers, and a technique which can inform the improvement of their own professional practice. The paper outlines some key philosophical discussions and debates about action research, and makes a case for the inclusion of action research in the hospitality management curriculum.
