Abstract
IN AUSTRALIA, approximately 150 cases of Legionnaire's Disease are reported annually. Untreated, the mortality rate is estimated at 20%. Australia's largest Legionnaire's Disease epidemic broke out in Wollongong (New South Wales) back in 1987, where some 45 cases required hospitalization and 10 of these died.
Local Health Authorities have been advised to conduct initial surveys of their particular municipalities to locate all known water cooling towers and evapora tive condensers to establish maintenance standards on such units to overcome possible future outbreaks of this disease with significant mortality.
