Abstract
The research note advocates for researchers to deeply engage with (qualitative) research paradigms intellectually underpinning entrepreneurial ecosystems (EE) thinking and research designs. We critically examine the status quo of the EE research landscape and contest dominant (critical) realist perspectives that permeate the field. The contribution emphasizes the importance of explicating the ontological and epistemological foundations of qualitative inquiry in EE scholarship. Drawing on other social science disciplines, we sensitize for and propose the application of social constructionism by outlining its epistemological pedigree, and its upside for diversifying, sophisticating and advancing (qualitative) EE theorization and methodologies. In doing so, we answer calls for diversity, innovation and pluralism in EE research.
