Abstract
In research concerned with the emergence of the Neolithic in western France and exchange networks incorporating Alpine polished stone axes, a special role is played by the prestige goods which accompany increased economic and marital exchanges between farming communities and sedentary 'Mesolithic' groups on the coast of Brittany. The non-functional polished stone axes discussed in this article are one of the elements in a new form of social competition dated to the first half of the 5th millennium BC.
