Use of Oral Tradition in Archaeology: Uthe Case of Ajdovščina Above Rodik,Slovenia

Abstract

This article addresses the potential of oral tradition (folklore) in the archaeological study of the past. It deals with oral traditions concerning landscape features in the area of the prehistoric and Roman site of Ajdovščina above Rodik, Slovenia. The palimpsest nature of modern landscapes can be regarded as a syncretic sum of past ways of life, land use, religious practices, and cults. In oral tradition concerning the ancient inhabitants of Ajdovščina, it is possible to discern the obscured memory of historical process. Certain sites, referred to in local oral tradition, mainly in the form of memories of religious practices performed there and of superstitions related to them, may well prove to be the remains of ancient sacred places. Methodological problems include identification of the generic and specific in oral tradition, the recognition of Christian intervention and/or censorship of ancient cults and beliefs, and the transposition and/or survival of elements of old ritual practices in popular beliefs. The aim of this article is to discuss the role of oral tradition linked to the landscape in the persistence of collective memory concerning historical circumstances and the survival and/or transformation of ancient cult or ritual sites and beliefs.

Cet article analyse le potentiel de la tradition orale (folklore) dans l'étude archéologique du passé, et plus précisément des traditions orales concernant les caractéristiques du paysage dans la région du site préhistorique et romain d'Ajdovščina près de Rodik, en Slovénie. La nature palimpseste des paysages modernes peut être interprétée comme étant la somme syncrétique des anciens modes de vie, usages de la terre, pratiques religieuses, et cultes. On peut retrouver dans la tradition orale des anciens habitants d'Ajdovščina la mémoire obscurcie de processus historiques. Certains sites mentionnés dans la tradition orale locale, notamment sous forme de souvenirs de rituels religieux pratiqués en ces lieux ou de superstitions y relatant, peuvent très bien s'avérer comme les vestiges d'anciens lieux sacrés. Les problèmes méthodologiques sont les suivants: la reconnaissance du générique et du spécifique dans les traditions orales, l'identification de l'influence respectivement de la censure chrétienne exercées envers les anciens cultes et croyances, et la transposition respectivement la survie d'éléments d'anciennes pratiques rituelles dans les croyances populaires. Le but de cet article est d'examiner le rôle que joue la tradition orale reliée au paysage dans la persévérance de la mémoire collective des circonstances historiques, et la survie respectivement la transformation d'anciens lieux rituels ou lieux de culte, et des croyances.

Dieser Beitrag hebt das Potenzial mündlicher Überlieferung (Folklore) für die archäologische Untersuchung der Vergangenheit hervor. Er beschäftigt sich mit mündlichen Tradierungen, die sich auf das Gebiet des vorgeschichtlichen und römischen Fundplatzes Ajdovščina bei Rodik in Slowenien beziehen. Die Natur moderner Landschaften als ein Palimpsest kann als synkretistische Summe vergangener Lebensweisen, Landnutzung, religiöser Praktiken und Kulte angesehen werden. In den Erzählungen über die früheren Bewohner von Ajdovščina ist es möglich, die verschwommene Erinnerung an historische Prozesse wahrzunehmen. Bestimmte Orte, die in der regionalen Überlieferung zumeist in Form von Erinnerungen an dort ausgeübte religiöse Praktiken und damit verbundenen Aberglauben Erwähnung finden, können durchaus frühere geheiligte Plätze belegen. Methodische Probleme umfassen dabei die Identifizierung genereller und spezifischer Merkmale mündlicher Überlieferungen, die Ansprache christlicher Intervention bzw. Zensur alter Kulte und Glauben sowie die Transposition bzw. das Überleben von Elementen früherer Kultpraktiken im heutigen Volksglauben. Das Ziel dieses Beitrages ist es, die Rolle der mündlichen Tradierung der Kulturlandschaft im Fortbestehen des Kollektivgedächtnisses zu historischen Umständen sowie das Überleben bzw. die Wandlung von früheren Kultplätzen und — vorstellungen zu untersuchen.
