We summarize a number of discussions with privacy advocates and industry experts on the privacy of medical records. These were carried out in 1997 under the the aegis of the HOST consortium. We were drawn to conclude that many of the most contentious issues arose from mutual misunderstandings and could be resolved once the discussion moved from philosophical generalities down to the operational detail.
