There are many issues which confront today’s healthcare librarian. These include the much publicized ‘digital library’ concept, perhaps to be embodied by the National Electronic Library for Health (NeLH), though this is still very much in the early planning stages. The future role of the librarian with the NeLH and the concept of knowledge management are also causes for concern, with librarians being overlooked as knowledge managers by businesses. The Internet has proven a valuable tool for information seekers, but bureaucracy and financial concerns have hindered the widespread uptake of this technology. It is perhaps time that healthcare librarians and medical informaticians began to collaborate more closely.
