Abstract
To determine the influence of work stress on psychological well-being, 1133 respondents who were involved in gainful work were asked how important specific aspects of work were for them and whether these occurred in their real work situation. Factor analysis extracted four factors, which were labelled 'work dependence', 'work independence' 'working conditions' and'freedom from pressure'. A fulfillment index was developed, based on the occurrence and non-occurrence of particular aspects in relation to their importance for the respondent. Both importance and fulfillment in each area were analysed in terms of sex and occupational hierarchy. Whilst the type of work ('dependent' or 'independent') did not affect the psychological well-being of the subjects, the non-fulfillment of desires was significantly associated with high psychological disturbance scores.
