This paper sets out to identify the source and the development of the so-called "objectivist illusion" in contemporary sociology. Alternative approaches to the social are then investigated with particular attention being paid to phenomenology and ethnomethodology. Within this framework some implications are drawn for the future of sociology in Australia and New Zealand.
