The experience gained from many research programmes shows that proper modelling of indoor air quality (IAQ) in buildings should include a description of man's activities and his interactions with the building and its HVAC sys tems. Neglect of this may lead to inaccuracies of prediction. This paper will discuss the problems connected with the incorporation of people's activities in different types of models: empirical, deterministic and hybrid. Basic ways in which people influence IAQ will be discussed. Problems with modelling in theoretical buildings will be highlighted.
