Abstract
The performance of a commercially available electrostatic air cleaner in filter ing aerosols of concern to health has been investigated, with efficiency trends related to gas flow rate. Using effective migration velocities, a predictive effi ciency equation was developed and tested for mixed aerosol population chal lenges. Although reliable for aerosols comprising particles smaller than approximately 5 μm diameter, the presence of large pollen grains (19 μm diameter) resulted in the loss of smaller particles from the collecting plates by a process of particle-knock re-entrainment.
