Abstract
A calculation of the electromagnetic forces is described for the solenoid plunger of a magnet switch to be used in an automotive starting motor. In order to improve its force versus plunger position characteristics, for the co-axial type starting motor of which the magnet switch is arranged on a concentric axis with the motor, a new type magnet switch is proposed having a magnetic bypass bridge added to the plunger. The pulling forces of various models for this magnet switch are evaluated. The calculated results are in good agreement with the experimental ones. The usefulness of the bridge is confirmed.
