The effect of a horizontal D.C. magnetic field on a Bénard convection was investigated experimentally. In the experiment the Chandrasekhar Number Q was increased from 0.0 to 4.0 × 105 under a Rayleigh number value around Ra = 4 × 105. Observation of the temperature fluctuation showed that the structure of the convection changes by increasing the field intensity in the following sequence; (1) turbulent convection, (2) chaotic motion, (3) oscillatory convection, and (4) two dimensional laminar convection.
