Abstract
A structural stress evaluation method and an analysis system in the design of superconducting coils with an inner ring support is described from the point of view of the mechanical strength. This system includes winding stress calculation, thermal stress calculation due to cooling-down, and magnetic stress calculation by the magnetic load in three dimensions. In order to obtain the axisymmetric or three-dimensional winding stress including the effects of axial load, a new calculation method called the "Changing Stiffness Method" has been developed. The accuracy of the winding stress calculation method has been verified from several studies and the effectiveness of the method on the coil supported with a flanged ring has also been verified. The analysis system has been applied to a high-field and high-homogeneity coil for experiment. The results of the calculations provide valuable information on the strength and the quench in the coil.
