Abstract
This paper outlines the common basis of the British and European codes of practice for structural masonry, BS 5628 and Eurocode 6, respectively, and discusses the several factors which determine the design strength of walls subjected to compressive loading in each code. The treatment of these factors is in many respects significantly different, making comparisons between the codes difficult other than by comparing the results of design calculations. Such comparisons do not appear to show any marked advance in the later code in design terms although it is more sophisticated and its drafters had available the results of more extensive research work. However, the Eurocode is at present at a “prestandard” stage and it is possible that refinements may be introduced.
