Abstract
I have a problem that is causing me to lose sleep. I work in a science department which I now realise has been bodging along for too long. My lab adjoins that of a colleague who is also a good friend. For years I have helped him plan lessons, deal with difficult situations, provide resources and generally keep things going. Last month, Ofsted identified him as an unsatisfactory teacher. As you may imagine, he is distraught. The school is making arrangements to improve his teaching skills but I know from long experience that he will find it difficult to respond. I feel trapped because it appears I have been covering up for him with people outside the department and shielding him from reality by colluding with his lack of skill. What should I do now?
