Abstract
This paper considers the ways in which teachers might benefit professionally from their involvement in school- based ITT. Based on a qualitative investigation conducted in a large English comprehensive school, and informed by a number of preliminary investigations in other schools, the paper considers teachers' claims about their profes sional development through working with student teachers. Nevertheless, whilst a large member of positive outcomes are reported, the paper sounds a note of caution, suggesting that many conditions must be satisfied in order for teachers and their schools to benefit significantly from their teacher education work.
