Abstract
Two psychologists, I. AL-ISSA and B. AL-ISSA, present an overview of mental illness and of the care of the mentally ill in Iraq. In a second paper I. AL- ISSA deals with the bearing of literacy on schizophrenic symptoms. He com pared literate with illiterate chronic Iraqui schizophrenics. J. T. SHUVAL and her coworkers tested the hypothesis that physicians in Israel provide more status and catharsis to some ethnic groups than to others, and that rural clinics will serve these latent functions of a medical institution better than urban clinics. J. PH. HES reports on the use of Catha edulis by Yemenite Jews who immigrated to Israel. Its somatic and psychological effects are described.
