Abstract
Descriptions of local concepts and treatments for mental illness among the Land Dayaks of Sarawak are given by NISSON, a psychiatric nurse who is also trained as a shaman, and by SCHMIDT, the only psychiatrist in the terri tory. They also give an indication of psychiatric conditions in Sarawak gen erally, and its special suitability for research. For Papua, BURTON-BRADLEY and JULIUS supply a similar type of information and discuss the possibilities of a collaboration between modern and indigenous therapy.
