Abstract
A new and richly bibliographic survey of transcultural psychiatry has been written by ELLENBERGER for a French encyclopaedia. The review gives an indication of its extent and theoretical approaches. The question whether homosexuality should be regarded as an individual, perhaps biological, phenomenon or as a sociocultural one is taken up by OPLER. DOHRENWEND, while starting from a specific piece of research carried out in New York, discusses to what extent cultural 'response styles' may undermine a currently popular type of psychiatric survey technique.
