Abstract
SURYA and his coworkers set out to estimate the total number of psychologically disabled in a selected area of Pondicherry (South India); to explore the social background of such disablement; and to assess public attitudes toward the matter. Their article highlights problems encountered in carrying out a mental health survey of this kind in a non-Western culture. SUKTHANKAR and VAHIA studied socio-cultural factors precipitating schizophrenia and hysteria in patients under their care in Bombay. Contrary to expectations DRIVER found on examination of the records of one-hundred and forty-four cases of homicides in Central India, analogous to observations in Europe and the United States, a homogeneity between criminal and victim regarding social milieu and social class.
