Abstract
This symposium is published to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the publication of the first Kinsey volume in 1948. Authors were asked to reflect on Kinsey's contribution to either their own discipline or their country's attitude. The first four contributors have worked at the Kinsey Institute. John Bancroft is the current director, and June Reinisch was his predecessor. Both John Gagnon and William Simon were sociologists at the Institute during the late 1950s and 1960s. Commentaries follow from Dennis Altman, a prominent Australian gay activist; Vickie Mays and Susan Cochran who focus upon ethnic concerns in the USA; and Gunter Schmidt, Michael Schofield and Judith Schuyf who write of the reception of Kinsey's Study in Germany, the UK and the Netherlands respectively.
