This commentary on Walters and Whitehead’s (1997) case report reviews some of the rationales for therapeutic intervention with children with gender identity disorder. Factors that might either facilitate or impede the prospects for therapeutic change are also reviewed. A case example of a three-year-old boy is provided in which gender identity conflict was apparently resolved.
