Abstract
The 5th annual SVM Fellows’ Course was held in Denver, Colorado, on December 14–15, 2019. This year the Society also launched a first annual Advanced Practice Provider (APP) course in parallel. Both courses were at full capacity soon after registration opened.
At the Fellows Course, a diverse group of approximately 50 fellows representing all invasive and non-invasive specialties focusing on vascular disease attended the event. Through didactic patient-based and interactive presentations, the Society’s expert faculty covered the entire spectrum of vascular disease, ranging from diagnostic algorithms for edema to advanced therapies for limb salvage. The superb didactic curriculum in combination with the dynamic case-based discussions and enhanced hands-on learning sections were met with extraordinary levels of fellow engagement.
The APP course recruited faculty representing both physicians and APPs. An enthusiastic group of approximately 25 APPs enjoyed an expansive vascular curriculum – delivered in a variety of formats including case-based lectures, tailored intimate discussions, and multiple hands-on sessions.
The co-location of the Fellow and APP tracks provided a unique opportunity for both groups to learn together in a variety of formats throughout the 2-day course. The resulting program was rich with multidisciplinary discussion and unique networking opportunities.
With the help of our generous industry sponsors (listed below), both groups engaged in a variety of in-depth discussions at mealtime symposia. Ultrasound-guided access, point-of-care ultrasound, advanced femoropopliteal intervention, deep and superficial venous intervention, and the medical management of peripheral artery disease – all covered in content-rich symposia. Also, APPs were offered hands-on, practical sessions, focusing on image analysis and on professional development.
Feedback from attendees of the course was overwhelmingly positive, and SVM looks forward to holding another successful course in 2020.

SVM had a strong showing at the 2019 Scientific Sessions of the American Heart Association in Philadelphia, PA. The City of Brotherly Love was filled with lively discussion as SVM members and guests gathered for an informal meetup at Iron Hill Brewery in Center City on November 16, 2019. The event was organized by Dr. Alec Schmaier on behalf of Drs. Aaron Aday and Yogen Kanthi for the SVM Next Generation Committee. These small gatherings during academic conferences have become somewhat of a tradition and provide a convenient opportunity for old friends and colleagues to reunite and for new connections to be made over the common interest in vascular medicine. Attendees provided career advice for junior faculty, reflected on how vascular medicine is utilized in their practice or institution, and debated who makes the best cheesesteak in Philadelphia. SVM members in attendance included Drs. Geoff Barnes, Scott Cameron, James Froehlich, Stanislav Henkin, Nick Leeper, Mary Whipple, Eri Fukaya, Diane Treat-Jacobson, Arvind Pandey, Judy Regensteiner, Jeremy Van’t Hof, Alec Schmaier, Aaron Aday, and Yogen Kanthi. Many non-members (aka future SVMers!) also came along, demonstrating the broad appeal of our discipline and the success of these social events.
