Message from the Scientific Program Committee Chair

Dear SVM Members,

The Scientific Sessions Program Committee has been hard at work on the 2017 program, and we hope it will be our best meeting yet. This year’s location right next to the French Quarter in New Orleans will give attendees a chance to learn, reflect, and network, but also to relax and enjoy terrific cuisine and shopping. While our program remains in development at this time, I would like to share the preliminary meeting schedule with our members.

Society members who are active on our committees or members of the Board of Trustees or Editorial Board of Vascular Medicine should plan on arriving on Wednesday, June 14th, as we have reserved this afternoon and evening for face-to-face meetings to conduct some work of behalf our Society. Further details regarding these meetings will follow.

The Scientific Sessions meeting will get an early start on Thursday, June 15th, with our traditional ‘Vascular Medicine Year in Review’, one of the most popular and informative sessions of the meeting, followed by another favorite, the ‘Founders’ Lecture’, which will be given this year by Dr. Mark A. Creager, MD, MSVM, past-president of SVM and immediate past president of the American Heart Association. Additional sessions on Thursday include an ‘Update on Treatment of Iliac Vein Flow Obstruction’ (in conjunction with the American Venous Forum) and ‘Vascular Disease in Women’. After lunch, we will have the first of two rapid fire sessions, with a new series, ‘My Pearls on How I Approach the Patient with …’, covering some of the more common or more challenging diagnoses encountered in a vascular medicine practice. The Jay D. Coffman Young Investigator Oral Presentations will be given, followed by a moderated poster session, where senior SVM researchers and clinicians will serve as poster professors and engage with presenting investigators. Thursday’s programming will culminate in a long-standing tradition: ‘Cases over Cocktails’.

The morning of Friday, June 16th will begin with our annual SVM member business meeting breakfast. The first session of the day is a ‘Focus on Phlebology and Lymphatic Medicine’ (in conjunction with the American College of Phlebology). Dr Bartholomew’s Presidential Address and our societal award ceremony will follow. Friday’s sessions will include ‘Aortic Aneurysm and Dissection – State of the Art’, the ‘Best of SVM Science: Rapid Fire Abstracts’, another rapid fire session (this time on anticoagulation), and three ‘Great Debates in Vascular Medicine’. Additional highlights of Friday’s program include the perennial favorite ‘Vascular Jeopardy’ (held over lunch) and concurrent afternoon workshops. For this year’s workshops, we tasked the Program Committee to develop six ‘how to’ sessions that will teach attendees a new skill that can be implemented within a vascular medicine practice. Topics for the workshops include: how to develop a smoking cessation program, how to interpret coagulation lab studies, how to write a business plan for a new program, and how to engage in social media, among others. Simultaneous with the ‘how to’ workshops on Friday afternoon, we will have a special mini-symposium for the early career vascular medicine specialist entitled ‘Starting Your Vascular Medicine Career or Expanding your Vascular Medicine Practice’. The annual ‘Celebrating Vascular Medicine Reception’ will cap off Friday’s events.

In a terrific development, SVM will host its first Vascular Medicine Board Review Course concurrent with the annual meeting. The Board Review Course will commence Thursday afternoon and will run through Sunday. Physicians who are preparing for the American Board of Vascular Medicine (ABVM) general vascular medicine and endovascular medicine examinations will find this program invaluable in their studies. The Board Review Course is co-sponsored by the Society for Cardiac Angiography and Interventions (SCAI), and SVM is very pleased to partner with SCAI on this effort … hopefully for years to come. I am personally thrilled that the Board Review Course is back under the SVM umbrella and bundled with our sessions, and I hope it brings many new members to our wonderful society. I would like to thank Gregory Piazza and the entire SVM Education Committee for their efficient work on developing this excellent program.

The whole-day program ‘SVM in the Vascular Laboratory’ will be held on Saturday, June 17th. This year’s focus is on ‘Hot Topics in Vascular Testing’. The working lunch for this session will be a not-to-miss mock registry examination. Thanks to Esther Kim, Rita Shugart, and Gene Zierler for planning this program.

The Program Committee is planning additional social and networking events throughout the meeting. We will end the program a bit earlier each evening to allow attendees to enjoy some cajun or creole cuisine in the French Quarter or beyond and to do some informal networking. We will again have the mobile meeting app to facilitate interaction and engagement during the meeting, and of course we will once again have an SVM Tweetathon (#SVM2017 @SVM_tweets) to promote our amazing science and clinical expertise. Last year we were actually ‘trending’ on Twitter and had over 1 million impressions related to the meeting … an important outreach for our educational content, our society, and our specialty.

Please make plans to attend the SVM 28th Annual Scientific Sessions this year, and please bring a colleague or trainee (or two!). We think there is something for everyone in the program and, of course, there will be abundant opportunities to catch up with colleagues and long-time friends in SVM.

ABVM Recertification for General and Endovascular Diplomats

Information for 2005–2008 Primary ABVM Diplomats

Recertification examinations are now offered for diplomats who completed the primary examination in 2005–2008. Each applicant must still maintain an active practice focused on vascular medicine and those taking the endovascular examination must have maintained peripheral interventional privileges. These examinations will consist of ~75 items to be completed within a 2-hour test window. Results will be available at the time of testing from the testing proctor. Physicians with passing scores will receive a diploma via US mail. Those who do not pass have to wait 3 months to retest. Electronic application will be conducted through the American Board of Vascular Medicine (ABVM) with testing performed at PSI testing centers. Recertification testing will be available throughout the year. The content of either recertification examination is modeled after the primary examination.

Recertification fees are $450 for the general exam, $650 for the endovascular exam and $1000 for both exams. For more information on ABVM recertification, visit www.vascularboard.org.

The application is online and is available through the end of the year. Testing is available now and through the end of the year. Test length and duration are ½ the length of the certification examination.

Cost is ½ of the certification examination.

Once application is made through the ABVM, a testing site and time will be made through PSI.

Why should physicians be certified or recertified?

Physician certification in their area of expertise is valued by patients, physician practices and health care institutions. Vascular medicine and endovascular medicine entail a specific and unique body of knowledge, skills and aptitude. Just like a primary certificate, recertification is not required, but does require preparation and expense. Physicians who maintain their certification demonstrate commitment and dedication to life-long learning. If you are a diplomat of vascular medicine or endovascular medicine and this is still your area of expertise and you are committed to life-long learning, then recertification is a must.
