Message from the New President

Dear SVM Members,

It is with great pride that I assume the role of President of the Society for Vascular Medicine for the next two years. We have come far – with strong leadership anddedicated, persistent talent. We are a strong and growing Society but we still havemuch to do. I welcome the challenge. Vascular medicine has not yet been recognizedby the general population with the import we know it deserves. As the numberone disease in the United States, treating vascular disease requires our leadership,intellect and training as we help our patients cope with the struggles of living withvascular disease.

It’s time to take the Society to the next level. Here is my plan:

• To be prepared to lead the charge, we need to grow in membership. I encourage you to remember who recruited you to the Society and what you’ve gained as a member – whether it be the kindness of another member providing counsel, the actions of a mentor, something you learned at the annual meeting or through this journal. I ask that you look to the future and imagine what we can do for vascular medicine practitioners and their patients with more members working to develop the profession through guidelines, identifying new treatments and mentoring young physicians. Identify and invite your peers and young professionals to join SVM.

• We will focus on our financial stability. While we are a non-profit organization, that refers to the tax status, NOT the status of the financial stability of the Society. With a solid financial foundation, we can provide more information for more physicians and their patients on a variety of platforms.

• We will continue to build the reputation of vascular medicine professionals through our work with the American Board of Vascular Medicine and the American Board of Internal Medicine. We expect our work with these organizations to be the key to the recognition of vascular medicine as a sub-specialty.

I hope you will join with me in this mission. It will happen with the strategic focus of a dedicated, professional force from our SVM members. If you have ideas, suggestions or questions, please contact me at [e-mail].
