Abstract

This year marks the 26th anniversary for the Society for Vascular Medicine annual meeting. It will be held 10–13 June in Baltimore, Maryland at the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront Hotel. The meeting will begin with a new feature: The ABCs of Vascular Medicine. This session will include up-to-date topics on venous thromboembolism; peripheral, renovascular and carotid arterial disease; and lymphedema and lipedema. A social hour welcoming everyone to the meeting will follow the opening session.
The meeting will get an early start on Thursday, 11 June with the traditional review of ‘The Year in Vascular Medicine’. There will be discussion centered on the latest treatment and therapy updates in PAD, venous thromboembolism, carotid artery and aortic disease, and a new feature this year – The Editor’s Best – from our journal Vascular Medicine.
Back by popular demand, this year’s meeting will feature three debates on controversial and current topics of interest including: the value of thrombophilia testing to determine length of anticoagulation therapy; the use of support hose to prevent the post-thrombotic syndrome; and endovascular versus surgical treatment of chronic limb ischemia. Sessions on target-specific oral anticoagulants and chronic limb ischemia will follow.
The highlight of the Thursday meeting will feature the Keynote Speaker, to be announced, who will be followed by the Jay D Coffman Young Investigator Presentations to round out the morning session. The afternoon session will highlight concurrent sessions on environmental disorders, aortic disease and aneurysms, upper extremity arterial disease, and lower extremity wounds. The day will end with Cases over Cocktails, followed by the Women in Vascular Medicine reception.
Friday, 12 June will start with the Annual Business Meeting followed by sessions on inferior vena cava filters, and updates on the diagnosis and treatment of cerebrovascular and peripheral arterial diseases. There will be an award ceremony for the Jess R Young Outstanding Vascular Medicine Educator and Master of the Society for Vascular Medicine followed by the presidential address. The ever popular Vascular Jeopardy will start the afternoon followed by chronic venous disease, lymphedema and lipedema. Also new this year is a session on Vascular Medicine Around the World, with speakers from Europe, Asia and South America. The day will end with topics addressing acute vascular emergencies. The annual gala event will follow.
There will be simultaneous sessions on Saturday, including a review of the vascular laboratory with topics covering cerebrovascular disease, and venous and peripheral disorders. There will also be a session on hot topics in vascular laboratory management and challenges in running a vascular lab. At the same time there will be a number of workshops on ‘How to develop a …’. The topics covered will include setting up a pulmonary embolism response team, an IVC filter retrieval team, wound care and vein clinics.
For those interested in recertification (this is the 10-year anniversary of the ABVM), we have asked the speakers to develop ABVM-type questions based on their lectures.
All in all, the meeting is complete, with topics of interest that should satisfy any vascular medicine specialist. We hope you will be there.
