Abstract

During the 28th year of the Journal, a total of 509 unsolicited manuscripts (original research, essays, concepts/methods and review articles) were submitted. This compares with 585 in 2021–22, a decrease of 13%. Submissions come from around the world: UK (12%), the rest of Europe (12%), North America (21%), South America (2%), Asia (38%), Africa (7%), and Australia and New Zealand (8%). By October 2023, 6 (1%) had been accepted for publication and 476 (93%) rejected; 18 (4%) were invited to re-submit a revised version. We aim to inform authors within 12 weeks of our initial decision (i.e. whether or not a manuscript will be sent for peer-review), and over the 28th year the mean time was 4 weeks. The mean time from submission to first decision after peer review was 20 weeks. For the 29 papers published in volume 28, the mean length of time between resubmission and acceptance was 139 days (range 51–321). The mean time from acceptance to online publication was 31 days. We will endeavour to maintain these standards which are only possible thanks to the help of the following people who kindly agreed to review papers for us during our 28th year:
